Pacho, The Maharaja Who Lives In City Palace, Jaipur, Becomes The First Royal AirBnB Host•
At just 20 years of age, when many of us were still trying to figure out if we’ve picked the right major in college, Maharaja Sawai Padmanabh Singh Bahadur, lovingly called Pacho, is an accomplished Polo player; was named in 2018 Forbes’ 30 under 30 list; has walked the ramp for Armani, Dolce & Gabbana, and the likes; has been called a muse by Mario Testino; and has been a cavalier at Le Bal for Ava Phillipe. According to Business Insider, the youngest new royal on the block looks over a fortune of up to 2.8 billion USD. That’s just scratching the surface of the royal life.
Perhaps the most covetable aspect of the royal life, is the palatial homes they seem to live in - those intricately carved domes, plush lawns, aureate furniture, high roofs and years of rich history embedded between the bricks that form the skeleton of these buildings that stand out. One can try to replicate the architecture, but not the soul. I know of a project that had started in Delhi a few years ago with the aim of reinventing Mughal architecture, that failed miserably. It’s not simply the outwardly beauty of these buildings, but the culture and stories from generations ago that these buildings are home to.
His Highness, Pacho, lives in one of the most splendid palaces in the North Indian state of Rajasthan, which is known for its vibrant culture. City Palace, situated in the Pink City of Jaipur is a popular tourist attraction. Built in 1727 by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, it represents the best of 18th Century Rajput architecture, with its ornate chambers, airy reception halls, crystal chandeliers, and gilded wall decorations. In addition to the royal residence, the palace complex also houses a museum. During the day, between 9.30 am and 5.00 pm, visitors can buy a ticket and take a walk around the expansive property. Its restaurant, Baradari, makes for the ideal fine dining venue for a date night, or a luxurious dinner with family or friends. Amid the carefully-preserved ancient architecture, Baradari is a chic setup with a modern twist.
Now, thanks to this experimental royal, City Palace has opened its doors on AirBnB. Starting 23 November, 2019, travellers can book the Gudiya Suite on AirBnB. This partnership is not just about opening up a room to rent. The Palace will offer an entire royal living experience, with a private butler, curated shopping tours, guided walks and other excursions. A trip to Rajasthan is incomplete without a taste of authentic Rajasthani food, and at City Palace, you get to please more than just the palate, as you will get to enjoy your meals with a breathtaking view of the Aravalli, and resident peacocks for company.
So, what are you waiting for? Plan that trip to Jaipur already!
